Tim Scott: Driving the narrative even if it takes him into a ditch
VP hopeful Tim Scott appeared on CNN this weekend and tried to spin reality like a top
Politics is a game.
By carving out a public impression and a public image you can get ahead in the game or you can fall behind. It’s all about perception. Winning the game matters more than anything else. Sometimes more than facts, and more than reality. Pushing your narrative and bolstering your perception is everything. It’s become common to never admit a flaw, never admit a failure, never admit a vulnerability. Just push through and pretend your narrative is sacrosanct.
This is why people hate this shit.
It’s transparent, it’s obvious. Very often it’s ridiculous and laughable. This may be attributable to Trump because he plays this game far more than most, but there is an infection of unreality growing within the Republican Party. They can’t accept anything that distracts from their view, they just ignore it - bat it away like an annoying insect and keep playing forward.
If you’re a MAGA I suppose this is admirable. It’s seen as staying on point. Staying on target. It’s “Taking it to the Libs.” But if you’re not —- it’s pretty pathetic.
Case in point, potential Trump VP pick Tim Scott this week on CNN.
He’s the perfect example of falling into a hole, and shoveling your hardest — to keep digging the hole deeper.
"Federal prosecutors are now asking for a gag order in that classified documents case after the former president said that FBI agents who searched Mar-a-Lago were, quote, locked and loaded, ready to take me out, and that he nearly escaped death," Bash noted. "But, Senator, that same language was also in the order for President Biden's home."
"So, do you agree with the attorney general that this is not only false, what the former president said, but extremely dangerous?" the CNN host asked.
"I haven't found myself agreeing with Attorney General Garland on any issue," Scott replied. "I will say I saw the video of the SWAT team from the FBI raiding Mar-a-Lago. I have not seen the same video of them raiding Joe Biden's garage. So I'd love to have that comparison."
You don’t have to see a video of this. Attorney General Garland was asked about this issue directly and he gave a direct answer 3 days ago.
Q: Most of us got a solicitation email from the former President that the Justice Dept. had orders to “Kill him” during the Mar A Lago raid. First can you give us some clarification on that particular point that he’s making and whether or not deadly force is authorized in other interventions including the search of Mr. Biden’s residence and office? And the second question is…
A: Can I do one at a time? On that one, that allegation is false and it is extremely dangerous. The document that is being referred to in the allegation is that the Justice Department’s standard policy limiting the use of force as the FBI advises it is part of the standard operations plan for searches and in fact it was even used in the consensual search of President Biden’s home.
So there you have it.
It shouldn’t really be a question because it’s common knowledge that FBI agents go everywhere and do everything while armed. This was even reported reported on Fox News.
According to Fox News' Jacqui Heinrich, "A person familiar with the Hur investigation confirms that the standard Department of Justice policy statement regarding the use of deadly force was also included in the operations order for the searches at President Biden’s residences in Delaware."
This is common sense. It’s obvious. It’s undeniable. But not to Tim Scott.
"The reality is that, I mean, just using this case as an example, it's not two tiers if you have the Justice Department, which is the Justice Department, as Joe Biden is currently president, also going in to get classified documents into his house," Bash pointed out. "And what I really am asking you about is the language being used, which is misleading."
"People like Steve Bannon called this an assassination attempt," Bash said. "Doesn't that kind of language concern you?"
Scott, however, appeared not to be concerned about the dangerous language used by Trump supporters.
"Well, I will simply say that watching the treatment of Joe Biden by the justice system, when they have found him unable to stand before a jury of his peers because he's too old, frankly, and his memory is shot, that is not the kind of simple, fair justice system that Americans expect," Scott said.
"Yeah, you're referring to Robert Hur and his report," Bash noted. "There were other reasons why they said they didn't prosecute Joe Biden."
First off, Trump didn’t “stand before a jury of his peers” because he didn’t fracking testify. He took it all sitting down. With his eyes closed.
Secondly, President Biden has not been indicted by a grand jury, let alone 5 of them. President Biden is not being required as a result of any indictment to “stand before a jury of his peers.” That’s not because the Justice System is “two-tiered” it’s because there’s no evidence supporting any allegation against him.
And for the record, Robert Hur also told Biden that his recollection was “practically photographic.” And the main reason he didn’t file charges was there was ‘no intent” to violate the law on Biden’s part. Plus, the “classified docs” that Biden has willfully were actually his own personal notes from his time as VP, which were never officially marked as classified.
This was addressed by Lawrence O’Donnell in detail. (Starting at 4:37 in the broadcast)
O’Donnell: Republicans on the Committee kept trying to suggest that Robert Hur would have recommended criminal charges against President Biden, if Biden were just younger. It was Presiden Biden’s “elderly, faulty memory” that would make him hard to convict in a courtroom, but the truth of the Hur Report is that it does not at any point identify a single criminal act that could be prosecuted against any one at any age.
It did not identify a single thing the Joe Biden did that anyone has ever been prosecuted for.
And the only classified material that Joe Biden knew he possessed was exactly the same material that President Ronald Reagan kept when he left the Presidency and the Justice Dept. at that time believed that what President Reagan did was perfectly legal and they justified it.
President Ronald Reagan kept daily notes during his time in the White House and Joe Biden kept similar daily notes during his 8 years as Vice President. Those notes would inevitably contain, possibly, classified information.
And those notes were deliberately kept by Joe Biden following the legal precedent set by Ronald Reagan and the Justice Dept. when Ronald Reagan deliberately kept those same notes.
And so the simple facts of the Biden case [that] there was no criminal prosecution because there was absolutely nothing that was even close to a criminal act.
Yeah, so what Scott is saying, again, is nonsense.
"Okay, and I just want to, one last time, what I'm asking you about is rhetoric that could end up dangerous, and you keep answering about Joe Biden," she continued. "So, is there anything you want to talk about with regard to that rhetoric?"
Scott deflected by talking about "anti-Semitism" on college campuses.
"We're actually seeing violence on college campuses, and yet the Democrat Party sits there, hands folded, letting it play out," he insisted.
Joe Biden very specifically called out Anti-Semitism and also those who are ignoring Palestine over a month ago.
He also gave a major speech on this subject 2 weeks ago.
So that’s not “sitting on his hands” - but honestly, the “violence” is a local issue being handled by local law enforcement. There really isn’t any reason or excuse to involve Federal Law Enforcement in this, and that decision would be up to Merrick Garland.
But there’s another issue — the “violence” that Scott is talking about didn’t come from the Pro-Palestinian protestors. It came from the Pro-Isreal protestors who were attacking the encampment at UCLA for hours, while the Campus Police and LAPD at first retreated and then later joined in the the attack.
CNN went out and directly confronted Pro-Israel protestors with video of their attacking the UCLA encampment — and most ran away without taking responsibility, or even threatened to call the police on CNN. Teacher and researcher Angie Givant provided information that helped them track down these attackers, who had also been protesting public schools, and had posted anti-Jewish tropes and memes on social media.
The violence wasn’t from those who oppose Genocide in Gaza, it was from those who support the genocide. Police wouldn’t respond to CNN to explain what they were doing to investigate or arrest those who were actually violent.
Some of those who work forces, are the same who burn crosses.
The reality is that the Police naturally side with Fascism. They allowed the Pro-Genocide attackers to brutalize the encampment for hours and then to go free. The system is not biased against Conservatives and Trump — it’s the exact opposite.
Joe Biden wasn’t let off the hook because he’s “old and feeble,” there was no evidence against him.
Trump is not being persecuted because the Justice System “hates America” — it’s because he’s a criminal.
Each and every time, the GOP pushes a false narrative. Each and every time, they endorse the lies and the gaslighting.
And they aren’t even good at it.
