I’ve always been a big fan of the band Sevendust - and this is a cover I recorded myself of the first song from their first CD. Coming out of Atlanta this band had started out as a Living Colour cover band themselves.
Quite ironically, I used to be a member of the Black Rock Coalition’s LA Branch. The Original NY Branch was the organization which brought together the members of Living Colour who formed a Rock, Funk and Jazz outfit that was put together to be an amalgamation of different forms of Black music in an age, particularly with Rock, where the genre was dominated by White artists.
I knew many BRC groups who were mixing Rock, Funk and Hip Hop years before we eventually heard bands like Limp Bizkit, Incubus, Korn and Deftones in the mid 90s. I even saw a show with Incubus opening for 24/7 Spyz at the Hollywood House of Blues.
Many other groups like this including King’s X, Nicklebag, Rage Against the Machine were all pushing forward many political themes in their music and making strong social justice arguments.
Sevendust arrived in 1999, managed by one of the guitar players from Twisted Sister and exploded onto the scene. They’ve constantly pushed their music foward over the past twenty years putting out album after album and doing some amazing acoustic performances. They’ve never achieved the heights they deserved, but they’ve always kept going and kept putting out amazing music.
This was my meager attempt to honor them.
